Industry: Industrial Manufacturing

This industry has had considerable adoption of structured authoring going back to SGML, though more and more companies who have not yet adopted structured authoring are now seeing the benefits.

Challenges

While early adopters need legacy data support, new entrants may be torn between the DITA and S1000D standards, both of which could reasonably work.

Solutions

SDL Contenta, SDL Trisoft, and SDL XPP are used in various settings in this industry. One company uses SDL Contenta and SDL XPP for installation guides, where ROI is achieved by: 1) managing reuse of content within families of similar products; 2) reducing printing costs, and; incorporating reviewers outside the technical publishing department via a web-based workflow. Print cost reduction is achieved by an innovative approach where SDL XPP initially publishes a multilingual document, queries the resulting document to see how many pages were produced, and then applies alternative print specs to see if the content can fit in an even signature (multiple of four pages). Eliminating black pages alone has accounted for roughly $100,000 of savings annually.
